What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines foundational sciences, nursing theory and extensive clinical practice. Early years cover anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology and health assessment. Core nursing modules address adult health, maternal-newborn care, paediatrics, mental health and community/public health nursing. Students also study evidence-based practice and nursing research methods, leadership and management in health care, nursing informatics, quality improvement and ethics.

Specialised strands focus on:

• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical skills, simulation-based scenarios and supervised practicum placements in acute, emergency and community settings to develop hands-on competence.
• Nursing Administration: healthcare systems, organisational behaviour, human resource and financial management, policy and legal issues relevant to nurse leaders and managers.
• Nursing Research: research design, statistics, critical appraisal of literature and a research project or capstone that applies evidence to clinical questions and quality improvement.

Clinical hours are completed through hospital and community partnerships in the region; simulation labs and skills centres support competency development prior to clinical placements. The programme culminates in integrative practicum or a capstone experience aligned to the chosen emphasis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a secondary school diploma with satisfactory completion of science and mathematics prerequisites such as biology, chemistry and a college-preparatory maths course. Typical requirements include a minimum cumulative GPA, academic transcripts and standardised test scores or admissions assessment results where required by the school (for example, an entrance exam for nursing programmes).

In addition to academic criteria, applicants must meet professional and health-related requirements before clinical placements: immunisation records, basic life support (BLS/CPR) certification, a clear criminal background check and, where applicable, drug screening. Registered nurses seeking an RN-to-BSN pathway must hold an active, unencumbered RN licence and submit proof of prior nursing education and clinical experience.

Selection into the pre-licensure BSN cohort may be competitive and can consider factors such as prerequisite course grades, observation or volunteer experience in healthcare and a personal statement. Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) and enter a wide range of clinical roles. Common early-career positions include staff nurse roles on medical-surgical, critical care, maternal-child, paediatric and mental health units, as well as community and public health nursing.

With additional experience or postgraduate study, alumni move into leadership and specialist roles: charge nurse, nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, case manager, infection control practitioner and quality improvement coordinator. Graduates with a focus on research are prepared to participate in clinical studies, inform evidence-based practice and support data-driven service improvement. The BSN also provides the academic foundation for advanced practice, master’s and doctoral study leading to roles such as nurse practitioner or nurse researcher.
