What you'll study

The programme combines core agricultural sciences with applied modules and opportunities for fieldwork. You will study plant biology and crop production, soil science and conservation, animal science and livestock management, and fundamentals of agricultural economics and agribusiness. Practical components include farm practicum, laboratory work, and use of precision agriculture tools such as GPS-guided equipment and remote sensing.

• Core science and practice: crop physiology, soil chemistry and fertility, integrated pest management, animal nutrition and health.
• Applied technology and sustainability: precision agriculture, farm machinery and systems, sustainable and regenerative farming practices, water management.
• Business and policy: agricultural economics, farm business management, marketing and supply chains, agricultural policy and rural development.
• Research and professional skills: statistics for agriculture, experimental design, data analysis, communications, and extension practice.
• Capstone and experiential learning: a final-year capstone project or research dissertation, and a period of supervised placement or internship with a commercial farm, co-operative or agribusiness.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification with strong grades in science and mathematics. Typical preparation includes biology, chemistry and maths; applicants with backgrounds in environmental science, horticulture or related vocational qualifications are also considered. Admissions usually take into account academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining agricultural experience or interest, and one or more references. Mature applicants with relevant work or farm experience are welcome and may be assessed on a portfolio and interview.

Graduates go on to a wide range of roles across agriculture, food and environmental sectors. Common career paths include farm and estate management, agronomy and crop advisory services, livestock production, roles in agribusiness and supply chain management, and positions with government agencies or non-governmental organisations involved in rural development and natural resource management.
