What you'll study

The programme combines core coursework in policy analysis and political institutions with quantitative methods and area‑specific electives. Students typically study microeconomics for public policy, statistics and empirical methods, public policy theory, program evaluation and cost‑benefit analysis, and public law and ethics.

Instruction emphasises applied skills: coursework in research design, data analysis (including econometrics and survey methods), policy implementation, and communications for policy audiences. Students choose electives across disciplines such as economics, sociology, health policy, environmental policy, education policy and urban studies to tailor their interests.

All students complete a culminating experience such as a senior capstone seminar, policy practicum or supervised internship that requires the application of analytical tools to real policy problems. Opportunities for independent study or a senior thesis are available for students who want a research‑focused path.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a secondary school qualification recognised by Brandeis and demonstrate academic preparation across liberal arts subjects, with particular strength in mathematics and social sciences. Successful candidates typically show evidence of analytical ability through coursework in statistics, mathematics or economics and strong written communication demonstrated in application essays and recommendations.

Brandeis reviews applications holistically. Typical supporting materials include high school transcripts, teacher or counsellor recommendations, and a personal statement. Where applicable, candidates may also present standardised test scores if they choose to do so. International applicants must satisfy English language proficiency requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles that require evidence‑based analysis, clear communication and an understanding of institutional contexts. Common entry‑level positions include policy analyst or researcher for government agencies, programme officer or researcher at non‑profit organisations, analyst roles at think tanks, and positions in consulting firms focused on public sector work.

Alumni also move into advocacy, community organising, legislative staff positions, and local government. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in public policy, public administration, law, business or related social science disciplines.
