What you'll study

The doctoral programme combines advanced coursework, language training, research methods, and an original dissertation focused on medieval and early modern European cultural history. Core work typically includes seminars in historiography and theory, specialised survey and topical seminars (for example on religion and society, material culture, intellectual history, or urban and court cultures), and professionalisation courses such as archival methods and digital approaches to historical sources.

Students are expected to develop reading competence in one or more relevant languages for primary-source work (commonly Latin and one or more modern languages such as French, German, Spanish or Italian). The degree culminates in a comprehensive examination and the composition and successful defence of a doctoral dissertation based on sustained archival and/or manuscript research.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a relevant graduate degree (typically an MA in history or a closely related field) with a strong academic record; exceptionally qualified applicants holding only a BA may be considered. Required application materials normally include a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining proposed research interests in medieval or early modern European cultural history, a writing sample demonstrating scholarly ability, and letters of recommendation from academic referees.

Because this field relies on primary-source research, evidence of language preparation (for example coursework in Latin or a relevant modern European language) is an important part of a successful application. Candidates should also be prepared to discuss a feasible plan for archival research and dissertation work. Departments may request or consider additional materials such as a research proposal or records of prior teaching experience.
