What you'll study

The programme combines core theoretical coursework, applied clinical training and opportunities for research or capstone projects. Core topics typically include anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, phonetics and phonology, language development across the lifespan, childhood and adult language disorders, fluency disorders, voice and resonance, dysphagia (swallowing disorders), neurogenic communication disorders, audiology fundamentals and evidence‑based assessment and intervention techniques.

Students also study professional issues such as ethics, multicultural competence, service delivery models and interprofessional collaboration. Research methods and statistics are integrated to support evidence‑based practice. A significant component of the programme is supervised clinical practica conducted in SLU’s on‑campus Speech and Hearing Clinic and in community placements (schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres), with progressively advanced practicum experiences and opportunities for externship placements.

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Relevant undergraduate coursework or demonstrable background in communication sciences and disorders is preferred; common prerequisite areas include introductory communication disorders, anatomy/physiology of speech and hearing, biology, psychology and statistics. Admissions typically consider academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement outlining professional goals and clinical experience, and documentation of observation or volunteer hours in speech‑language pathology settings.
