What you'll study

This PhD emphasises rigorous, discipline-specific research into how teachers are prepared and how they continue to learn in practice. You will study theories and empirical research on teacher learning, curriculum and instruction for specific levels and methods (for example elementary literacy, secondary subject methods, or special education), and the design and evaluation of professional development.

• Foundations of teacher education: historical and contemporary perspectives on teacher preparation, licensure, ethics and the role of schools in society.
• Research methods and statistics: advanced quantitative methods, multilevel modelling, qualitative methods, mixed methods design and research pragmatics for classroom and programme evaluation.
• Curriculum and instruction in specific levels and methods: subject- and level-specific pedagogy (e.g. literacy, STEM, social studies), assessment design, and scaffolded instructional approaches for diverse learners.
• Professional development theory and practice: design, facilitation and evaluation of sustained professional learning, mentoring and coaching models, job-embedded learning and communities of practice.
• Policy, leadership and systems: studies of district- and state-level policy influences on teacher education, accreditation, programme improvement and scaling professional learning innovations.
• Dissertation research: sustained original research under faculty supervision that contributes to scholarship on teacher education or professional development; typically includes proposal development, IRB procedures, data collection and dissemination.

Programme structure combines seminars, practicum or field-based research with a strong emphasis on scholarly output. Coursework and required exams precede focused dissertation work, and students typically engage in collaborative research projects with faculty and partner P–12 schools.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a relevant master's degree (for example in education, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field) or equivalent professional experience. Typical application materials include:
