What you'll study

This programme combines conceptual study with applied analysis of teaching and learning in Muslim contexts. Core themes include historical and theological foundations of Islamic education, contemporary pedagogical approaches used in madrasas and faith schools, curriculum design and assessment, and the relationship between education, identity and citizenship.

• Research methods for education – qualitative and quantitative approaches to educational research and training in project design, ethics and data analysis.
• Islamic pedagogies and curriculum – study of classical and contemporary instructional methods, syllabus development, and approaches to teaching Qurʼanic, legal and theological material.
• Comparative and global perspectives – examination of Islamic education across different national and cultural settings, including policy, regulation and community schooling.
• Religion, identity and citizenship – how Islamic education intersects with questions of pluralism, multiculturalism and social cohesion in diverse societies.
• Optional modules – students typically choose from options such as pedagogy in multicultural classrooms, curriculum theory, or specialised topics in religious education and interfaith engagement.
• Dissertation or major project – an independent research project that allows students to investigate a topic in depth under academic supervision, producing a piece of original scholarship or an applied research report.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in education, religious studies, Islamic studies, social sciences or a related discipline, or to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. Candidates with substantial relevant professional experience in teaching, religious instruction, community education or policy may also be considered.

All applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English. Additional requirements can include a personal statement outlining motivation and research interests, and academic or professional references.
