What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical, historical and applied approaches to Islamic education. You study core topics such as classical and modern Islamic pedagogies, the history of Muslim educational institutions, curriculum formation in Islamic contexts, and contemporary debates about faith-based schooling, pluralism and citizenship. Modules typically include a mix of lectures, seminars and case-study workshops.

• Core themes: theories of education in Islamic thought; development of madrasas and modern Islamic schools; the role of religious knowledge and secular curricula.
• Contemporary issues: curriculum design and assessment in Muslim contexts, teacher formation and professional development, religious literacy, gender and inclusion, and the interface between state policy and faith schools.
• Research methods and dissertation: training in qualitative and comparative methods applied to educational settings, culminating in an independent dissertation on a chosen aspect of Islamic education.
• Optional modules: comparative religion and education, globalisation and education policy, community education and outreach, or modules from related departments to tailor the degree to your interests.

Study modes: the programme is offered full-time and part-time. Assessment is by a combination of essays, project work, presentations and a final research dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in education, theology/religious studies, history, social sciences or a related subject. Applicants with significant professional experience in education, community or religious organisations may be considered where their background demonstrates readiness for postgraduate study.

• Academic qualifications: a relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
• Professional experience: professional or voluntary experience in teaching, curriculum development, community education, or religious institutions will strengthen an application.
• Supporting documents: a personal statement outlining relevant interests and proposed research topics, academic transcripts, and references (academic or professional).
• English language: if English is not your first language, you will need to meet the University's English language entry requirements.
