What you'll study

This 18-credit advanced certificate focuses on core administrative competencies for nurse leaders. Courses emphasise practical application in healthcare settings and are often delivered in accelerated or hybrid formats to accommodate working professionals.

• Healthcare Leadership and Management — leadership theories, team development, conflict resolution and organisational behaviour in healthcare.
• Financial Management for Nursing — budgeting, resource allocation, cost-benefit analysis and fiscal decision-making in clinical departments.
• Quality Improvement and Patient Safety — quality measurement, performance improvement methodologies (e.g. PDSA), risk management and safety culture.
• Healthcare Law, Ethics and Policy — regulatory compliance, standards of practice, risk and ethical decision-making for nurse administrators.
• Human Resources and Workforce Planning — staffing models, recruitment, retention, performance appraisal and labour relations relevant to nursing services.
• Health Informatics and Data for Administrators — use of clinical and operational data for decision-making, basic informatics concepts and reporting for leaders.
• Capstone or Administrative Project — an applied project or portfolio demonstrating integration of administrative knowledge in a real-world setting.

Depending on delivery, some courses may include case studies, group projects and a practicum or mentored administrative experience to apply learning in an institutional context.

Entry requirements

• Current, unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the relevant licensing jurisdiction.
• A bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) or an associate degree in nursing (ADN) with additional professional experience; specific programme advisors will assess equivalency.
• Minimum postgraduate GPA as specified by the programme (applicants with lower GPAs may be considered on an individual basis with additional documentation).
• Professional résumé or curriculum vitae demonstrating clinical experience and any supervisory responsibilities.
• Personal statement outlining career goals and reasons for pursuing nursing administration, and contact information for professional references (typically one or two).
• Some applicants may be invited to an interview; employers’ support or verification of current role may strengthen an application.

Graduates are prepared for frontline and mid-level administrative roles within hospitals, community health organisations, long-term care facilities and ambulatory settings. Typical positions include:
